Cesena stands in the center of the Romagna a crossroads between the Adriatic sea and the Apennines, homeland of the ancient lordship Malatesta.
Along Corso Sozzi, in the old town of Cesena, you reach Piazza Giovanni Paolo II. Here you find the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista), in gothic style. Through Corso Mazzini you get to Piazza Fabbri and visit Biblioteca Malatestiana (Malatesta Library), the first public library in Italy, recognized by UNESCO "Memory of the World", jewel remained unchanged for almost six hundred years.
Behind the library instead is located the charming chiostro di San Francesco (Cloister of St. Francis).
From Piazza del Popolo, which hosts the precious sixteenth century Fontana Masini and the Loggetta Veneziana, begins the staircase to the Malatesta Fortress, one of the landmarks of the city from where you have a panoramic view of the sea of Cesena and Cesenatico and Cervia.
On the same hill you’ll find the Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte famous for its collection of ex-votos (votive tablets for favors received back to more than five centuries ago) among the richest in Europe, to the imposing dome painted by Milani. Finally for nature lovers there is the Parco del Savio entering the urban center of Cesena between the two bridges in the city, the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) and Ponte Nuovo (New Bridge). The park can be explored on foot or by canoe.
